Bass reports are showing that the bite has slowed down. It seems that some are still catching quality fish while others are struggling to get a bite. Anglers may have success with topwater frogs, ned rigs, and shaky head in the backwater areas where grass and bushes are prominent.

Pickwick Reservoir, Tennessee/Alabama, Blue Catfish

The largest blue ever recorded from these sections of the river stands at 111 pounds, but there's little doubt that fish surpassing the 150 mark swim there and could at any moment break the 143-pound world record caught at Buggs Island, Virginia, in 2011.

Pickwick Reservoir's greatest reputation is its superb smallmouth bass fishing. One of the most popular smallmouth fishing areas is the "Shoals" section directly downstream of Wilson Dam to the end of Seven-Mile Island.

The best Largemouth bass fishing on Pickwick lake is generally between mid-March to May. Pre-spawn largemouth move into shallow backwater areas in preparation for the spring spawn. After spawning they move out to deeper slackwater areas, adjacent to the swift currents in pursuit of forage.

Smallmouth Bass: 15-inch minimum length limit. Spotted Bass: No length limit. Crappie (all species): 30 per day in combination, 9-inch minimum length limit.

Lures to Use: Spinnerbait: I like double willow leaf blade in white and chartreuse tints at Pickwick. White and Chartruese blades can be great for the smallies when it is cloudy out. Rattletraps and Shallow Crankbaits - early spring you just can't beat this bait for locating fish and searching flats.

The life expectancy of a channel catfish is around 14 years old but they can exceed this number. In captivity the channel catfish is generally harvested after 2 years.

Within an hour of sunrise and an hour after sunset are the times when fish are likely to bite the most. Fishing for some species of fish is much better at night than during the day. Although it is possible to catch fish during daylight hours, fish are less likely to bite when the sun is at its apex.

Fishing in the Spring, Summer & Fall

The resort is located right at the mouth of the Buttermilk Falls which creates a great natural fishing hole. Farther out the lake reaches depths over 200ft creating an ideal habitat for walleye (pickerel) and lake trout. There is also bass, white fish and ling-cod in our waters.
